La Casa Augusta es un proyecto de autoconstrucción motivado por la memoria de mi abuelo, don Augusto Moreno. Él fue un visionario, un niño cordillerano quien de alguna forma nos dejó un legado material e inmaterial que nos acompaña desde que él ya no está (ver "te fuiste antes de que pudiera volver").
Él soñó con la maison faite a la maison, la casa hecha en casa. Soñó con la bioconstrucción, con los fardos de paja y el barro. Soñó con siempre estar en la cordillera. Con esta casa le hacemos memoria, y vamos aprendiendo de todo lo que hay detrás de un proyecto de tal tamaño.
The Augusta House is a self-construction project motivated by the memory of my grandfather, Augusto Moreno. He was a visionary, a mountain boy who somehow managed to leave a material and intangible legacy which stays with us ever since he left (see "you left before i could come back").
He dreamed about a maison faite a la maison, a home built at home. He dreamed about bioconstruction, building with strawbales and mud. He dreamed about always being in the mountains. With this house, we honour his memory, and learn about all the things behind such a project.
Empezamos a subir al cajón del Achibueno en julio del 2024, cada dos semanas más o menos. Primero aprendimos del territorio, identificamos el lugar (enmarcado por una piedra maravillosa), y empecé a soñar de forma situada desde un claro elevado y alargado que nos permitió dar forma al proyecto.
Llevaba un año haciendo distintos planes, pensando en formas de organizar una casa y en qué buscaba de esta construcción. Por ejemplo, desde el inicio tuve clara la búsqueda de subir, de ver el bosque casi como un pájaro, de ver las montañas que esconden los árboles.
We started out visiting the site in july 2024. We went every other week, first to learn about the land, identify the location for the house (marked by a beautiful stone), and I started dreaming in a located manner in an elevated, elongated forest clearing which allowed us to shape this project.
For over a year, I had been sketching different types of plans, thinking in ways I could organise the house, asking myself what I was looking for from this building project. For example, one thing I knew from the beginning was that I wanted to build up, I wanted to see the forest as a bird could, see the mountains hidden behind those big, beautiful, ever-green trees.
Diciembre-Enero - Demoramos un poco en conseguir personas que se atrevieran a subir con sus máquinas para ayudarnos a hacer la zanja y subir áridos, pero finalmente dimos con las personas indicadas en el momento indicado. Contamos además con la maravillosa ayuda de un gran amigo, que pasó de la teoría (de la ingeniería en construcción) a la práctica construyendo con nosotrxs toda la fundación de la casita.
December-January - It took a little while to find people who would dare to go up the mountain with their machines, to help us dig the hole and bring the materials, until finally we found the right people at the right time. We also had the wonderful help of a good friend, who went from theory (of construction engineering) to practice by building with us the foundations of the little house.
En esta fase del concreto también recibimos la bella ayuda del Ale, la Javi y la Caro. Entre los tábanos y bajo el sol, y casi sin experiencia (a excepción del Ale), logramos esta primera fase exitosamente.
On this concrete phase, we also recieved the wonderful help of Ale, Javi and Caro. Amongst gadflies and under the sun, with almost no experience (aside from Ale), we managed this first phase successfully.
Febrero - Si pensaba(mos) que los cimientos fueron confusos, para la estructura (de madera) entramos en más dudas, por lo que buscamos más ayuda - especialmente para el diseño y el montaje. Nos pasamos unas buenas 4 jornadas cortando, atornillando y martillando en el campo durante la ola de calor, y después subimos todo para poner en pie el esqueleto.
February - If we thought that the foundations were confusing, the wood structure arose even more questions, so we found some more help especially for its design and mounting. We spent dome good 4 days building it (cutting, nailing and screwing) out in the land during the big heat wave, and then brought everything up the mountain to finally have the skeleton of the house mounted.
Marzo - Para la travesía de los fardos nos encontramos con don Manuel, quien nos ayudó mucho en el resto del proceso. Camilo y el Pelao (con ayuda de don Manuel para la carga), cargaron y descargaron (a la medianoche) unos 140 fardos de paja con toda la motivación. Así empezamos a rellenar los muros, también con más ayuda porque se nos empezaba a venir encima el invierno.
March - For the strawbale adventures we found don Manuel, who helped us so much from there on forward. Camilo and Hector (with the help of don Manuel for the loading) loaded and unloaded (at midnight) about 140 strawbales with the best energy. So, we started filling up the walls, also with some extra help because winter was just around the corner.
La siguiente etapa fue la más crítica, donde yo participé menos (y me estresé más, como hablo en el blog). Lo importante es que llegamos al invierno con un techo.
The next phase was the most critical, and it was also where I was less around (due to stress, as I wrote on the blog entry). Main thing was: we got to winter with a roof.
La instalación eléctrica con ayuda de nuestro querido amiguito Yerbis y la Amaranta.
For the electrical installation, we got the help of our friend Yerbis and Amaranta.
Abril - Y acá empieza para mí la sanación: el barro. Igualmente fue mucho más largo de lo que pensábamos (como todo ha sido), pero fue en compañía nuevamente de gente maravillosa como el Toti y el Karamelito. Primero es la imprimación (y terminar trabajos inconclusos - bien me dijeron que estaba llegando a una fase donde mientras menos queda, más queda //la historia sin fin).
April - Here comes my healing: mud. Even though it was much longer than we thought (as it all has been), it was wonderful thanks to the great people who came help us: Toti and Karamelito. First came the primer, just earth and water (and finishing some unfinished works, as somebody accurately told me: this was the phase where the less we had left, the more we'd have left // aka the neverending story).
Después vino el revoque grueso con unos detalles soberbios (me faltan fotos), además de la instalación de las ventanas y la puerta.
After that came the thick plaster (mud with straw and sand), with some wonderful mud-sculpting details (pictures pending), and also the installment of the door and windows).
Faltan fotos también del revoque fino, que nuevamente le cambió el color a la casa y ahora se ve muy... fina. Ha sido un proceso muy largo, seguimos en él pero ahora estamos yendo a pasito de tortuga porque volvimos a ser sólo 2 y quien tenga la voluntad de subir a ayudarnos. Faltan muchas cosas, pero nunca las ganas de seguir avanzando y aprendiendo como hemos hecho con cada paso. Seguimos soñando y construyendo.
Pictures are pending also of the thin/fine plastering, which changed the colour of the house yet again, and made it look oh--so-fine. It has been such a long process, which we are still in - though now we are going slowly because it is just the 2 of us left, and whatever friend comes to help us. There are so many things left to do, but we also have the patience necessary to keep going on, learning, dreaming and building on.
