juneteenth jazz museum
este fue mi proyecto de tesis de pregrado de arquitectura, el año 2020.
el punto de partida para el proyecto fue proponer una solución arquitectónica a una serie de problemas a nivel urbano y social en el barrio afroamericano histórico de oklahoma city. después de un semestre de investigación, surgió la pregunta: ¿cómo darle un hogar a la reivindicación de un pueblo marginalizado?
esto es un ejercicio de memoria colectiva.
this was my undergraduate thesis project for the bachelor of architecture degree, presented in 2020.
the prompt was to propose an architectonic solution to a series of urban and social problems in the historic black neirhbourhood of oklahoma city. after a semester-long investigation, we formulated the question: how to give home to the vindication of a marginalised peoples?
this is a collective-memory exercise.
los problemas sociales y urbanos se vuelven problemas históricos para un pueblo a quien se le ha intentado borrar su pasado y su cultura, pero a pesar de todo ha sobrevivido a través de la oralidad y la música.
desde un esfuerzo barrial existente para la creación de un museo del jazz (por ser este un género musical que retrata toda esta historia), diseñé una propuesta de museo para la renovación de un edificio existente que estaban comprando en el corazón del barrio. el museo cuenta la historia del jazz al contar la historia desde la esclavización de africanos y africanas hasta las realidades de sus descendientes en lo que hoy es estados unidos y en particular oklahoma city.
the urban and social problems are historical problems for a people to whom their past and culture has been under erasure threat for hundreds of years. despite it all, some sense of memory has survived through oral history and music.
there was a local effort for the making of a jazz museum (for being jazz a genre that portrays this long history), and from it i designed a proposal for the museum located on a land they were looking to buy with an existing building. the museum tells the story of jazz from the beginning, "the belly of the slaveship" as i was told by them - all the way to today.
para contar la historia, la arquitectura fue el lienzo. para eso, cada etapa de la historia fue relacionada a un sentimiento, y esos sentimientos dictaron la calidad espacial: textura, espacio, luz, forma, y el ambiente en general.
estas relaciones (entre las etapas de la historia y los distintos sentimientos) fueron formadas a través de la experimentación material con pequeñas maquetas. cada maqueta representó un sentimiento a través de las cualidades espaciales listadas, y como un puzzle fueron presentadas a distintas personas para ver cómo se relacionan entre ellas, qué evocaba cada maqueta, y qué historia cuenta la combinación final de maquetas.
for this history, the architecture had to be a canvas. thus, each stage of history was related to a feeling, and these feelings dictated the quality of the space in terms of texture, spaciousness, light, shape, and overall atmosphere.
these relationships (history-feeling) were formed through material experimentation with small models. each model represented a feeling through the spacial qualities listed above. these were tested with different people to see how they relate to one another, what they relate each modele to, and what story is told with each finished puzzle.
